Movement Disorders:- Movement disorders are a group of nervous system conditions that affect movement. They can cause either increased movements or reduced or slow movements. These movements may be under the person's control, known as voluntary. Or the movements may not be under the person's control, known as involuntary. There are many types of movement disorders that cause different symptoms. For example, dystonia causes muscle contractions that lead to twisting of the body. Another movement disorder called chorea causes brief periods of quick involuntary movements that happen over and over. Parkinsonism causes slowness of movement with stiffness, tremors or loss of balance. Treatments may be available to help manage the symptoms of movement disorders. Depending on the type of movement disorder, medicines, therapies or surgeries may be available. If a condition causes the movement disorder, treating the condition may help improve symptoms. There are many different movement disorders. Some of the more common types include: • Ataxia, the loss of muscle coordination • Dystonia, in which involuntary contractions of your muscles cause twisting and repetitive movements. The movements can be painful. • Huntington's disease, an inherited disease that causes nerve cells in certain parts of the brain to waste away. This includes the nerve cells that help to control voluntary movement. • Parkinson's disease, which is disorder that slowly gets worse over time. It causes tremors, slowness of movement, an trouble walking. • Tourette syndrome, a condition which causes people to make sudden twitches, movements, or sounds (tics) • Tremor and essential tremor, which cause involuntary trembling or shaking movements. The movements may be in one or more parts of your body. Causes of movement disorders include: • Genetics • Infections • Medicines • Damage to the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nerves • Metabolic disorders • Stroke and vascular diseases • Toxins Treatment varies by disorder. Medicines can cure some disorders. Others get better when an underlying disease is treated. Often, however, there is no cure. In that case, the goal of treatment is to improve symptoms and relieve pain. What is considered a movement disorder? Movement disorders are a group of neurological conditions that cause abnormal movements. They could be increased movement (like spasms, jerking or shaking) and/or decreased or slow movement. They can affect actions you choose to make (voluntary) or cause uncontrolled (involuntary) movements. Every body movement you make, from lifting your leg to moving your jaw and tongue to talk, involves complex communication between your: • Central nervous system (you brain and spinal cord). • Motor nerves • Skeletal muscles. Damage to or malfunction of the areas of your brain that control movement results in a movement disorder. There are several different movement disorders, and they vary in severity. Some only affect one area of your body, while others can affect most of your body. Some may interfere with certain tasks, like writing, while others can lead to issues with walking and mobility.
